July Race Report

Kimbolton 8th July 2007

A dry day left plenty of time for 12 lap finals as the Hunts Kart Race Club hosted another round of their 2007 Championship at Kimbolton. Circuit one was back in use in preparation for August’s TKM Festival meeting.

Cadet: In Cadet, Toby Sowery got away well, ahead of James Armitage, Stephen Letts, Charlie Savage and Daniel Burton. Letts was soon past Armitage to challenge Sowery for the lead. Letts move on Sowery a lap later didn’t come off leaving Armitage and Savage all over the back of him. With just three tenths of a second separating the top 4, any one of them was in a position to win. Letts took the lead for half a lap, but Sowery got back in front as Savage passed Armitage for third. With a lap to go Savage surprised Sowery at Kestrel to take the lead, hanging on to win from Sowery with Letts grabbing third on the run to the line.

Rotax Mini Max/TKM Intermediate: Jordan Aveline lead novice Josh Gollin and Karl Cocca. Aveline gradually established a comfortable gap from Gollin with Cocca falling back behind Steven Jeeves and Michael Whitaker. In Intermediates, Alistair Clarke was straight into the lead as half the field spun out of contention. Jack Kemp and Thomas Kolasky had a race long ding-dong battle, but Kemp was in front when it mattered.

Rotax Junior Max: Pole man Nick Wones was out-dragged at the start by Jack Goff and in his attempt to regain the lead, made contact with David Turton, spinning out of the race. Jake Parker also dropped out of the reckoning from grid 3. This left Goff all on his own up front and unchallenged to the flag. Turton held second, but Alex Magee was moving up fast. Despite his speed, Magee took several laps to get past leaving him out of time for further progress. Meanwhile Dominic Russell found some pace and on the last corner grabbed third from Thirkettle and Howell with the unfortunate Turton crossing the line sixth. David DeRosa took the novice award.

Junior TKM: Sam Blake was ahead for just one lap, Jake Ball making a determined passing move for a lead he never looked like losing. Earlier in the day Ball had decimated the lap record with a time of 44.57 seconds, faster than the Extremes! Blake continued to drop down the order while Joe Porter and Daniel Butcher-Lord moved the other way. Butcher-Lord got a good tow on the last lap to sweep past Porter for second. Porter was left to hang on to third ahead of Francis Harrold and Blake. The novice award went to James Warner.

Rotax Senior 177: Dan Holland was back to dominate Rotax 177 with a lights-to-flag win and a new lap record of 42.98 seconds. Joe Burnett moved up to take second from Dave Barnsby as Holland put in an exhibition run lapping half a second a lap quicker than anyone else. Keeping it in the family, Tom Holland took the novice award.

TKM Extreme: The decision by the Clerk of the Course to deploy the black and yellow quartered flag after a first lap incident, left many TKM Extreme drivers bemused. When the green flag was shown, the field was so strung out that chances of progress to the top places from further back were limited. Ryan Cole led Luke Caudle, Oliver Sedden and Daniel Humphrey with the rest too far back to affect the podium positions. Cole was impervious to the threat of first Sedden and latterly Caudle, who assumed second spot at half distance. Humphrey demoted Sedden a further place leaving him vulnerable to a late attack by Helen Gardiner, but despite a new class lap record of 44.67 seconds, Gardiner just missed out by the narrowest of margins. Luke Gray won the novice award.

Rotax Senior Max: With a fine start, Daniel Russell moved past Karl Haxton and Mark Dawson to lead the opening laps, Kyle Chesterman and Stephen Johnson following some way behind. Johnson took fourth from Chesterman as the top three continued to pull away. Haxton was into the lead on lap four and a lap later Chesterman found himself behind Carl Holmewood and looking out of it. Lap six was all change. Russell made a stunning pass on Haxton at the Willows, and then as Haxton tried to re-pass him at the Bus Stop, the two came together. Russell managed to continue, but Haxton went off and out of the race with the following pair of Dawson and Johnson also dropping right back in a separate incident. This left Russell free to drive to the flag ahead of a rejuvenated Chesterman with Alex Rowley a delighted third. Dean Mason was the novice winner.

250/125 ICC: In 250, Martin Goodliffe was quickly into his stride to pass Steve Burton and Andrew Dean. Dean took a couple of laps to dispose of Burton, by which time Goodliffe was well clear. Dean was now clearly the quicker kart, but whilst able to catch the leader, was unable to find a way past. In 125, fast starting Jack Angus led from start to finish for the second month running, comfortably clear of Paul Lawson and Michael Lunn. Chris Thexton took the novice award.
